John Straus Honored with 2021 HGR Award
At its 130th Annual Meeting, Family Centers honored longtime Board member John Straus for his contributions in helping to improve the lives of thousands of children and families across Fairfield County. At the event, which was held Thursday, Nov. 4 at First Presbyterian Church in Greenwich, John was presented with the 2021 Helen Gratz Rockefeller Outstanding Volunteerism Award.
As a member of the Finance and Investment Committees, John’s thoughtful counsel and expertise helped Family Centers meet the highest standards of fiscal responsibility and transparency. Once he was elected Treasurer in 2016, John’s leadership and guidance proved to be invaluable as Family Centers strategically grew its budget and program offerings to meet community needs. He also played a key role in shepherding the organization through the uncertainty of the pandemic, and ensured it remained financially strong.
This past year, John also volunteered to participate in Family Centers first-ever Board-led Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Core Group. Together with seven of his colleagues on the Board, John participated in an intensive, six-month consultancy designed to access the ways in which the organization can foster a greater sense of diversity and inclusiveness with its governance structure. Thanks to this group’s insight, a framework was developed that will serve as the backbone of the Board’s racial equity strategy.
Congratulations, John!
