Family Centers celebrates the life and legacy of Nancy Brown, a longtime friend of Family Centers and committed champion for our community’s most vulnerable residents who passed away on March 11 following a long battle with lymphoma.
Nancy’s relationship with Family Centers dates back to the 1970’s when she served as a social worker with Family & Children’s Services. That organization would merge with The Family Center in 1995, setting the stage for Family Centers to become the multi-faceted agency it is today. Nancy had an unyielding commitment to assisting at-risk children, and led the agency’s Friends of Youth program.
When Nancy’s children were young, she served on the Board of Directors at The Family Center. Most recently, she was a guiding force as Family Centers expanded its footprint in the health care sector. From 2015-2018, Nancy sat on Family Centers Health Care’s Advisory Board and helped the agency’s newly-established Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) achieve its first accreditation by the Joint Commission.
In addition to her work at Family Centers, Nancy was an influential and respected leader in the Town of Greenwich. From 1978-2007, she served as the town’s Director of Community Development – the first Black woman in Greenwich history to lead a municipal department. During her tenure, Nancy authorized millions of dollars in Community Development Block Grants to help Family Centers and other Greenwich nonprofits with capital and programmatic needs.
In recognition of her ongoing dedication to Greenwich’s underserved children and families, Family Centers recognized Nancy with its 2007 Family Champion Award.
Nancy spent her lifetime advocating and giving a voice to many who could not effectively speak or be heard from on their own behalf. She was a woman of courage, compassion and conviction.
She will be deeply missed by everyone at Family Centers.
