Our History

Family Centers has a rich history of serving communities throughout lower Fairfield County dating back to 1891 with the creation of the Stamford Family Welfare Society.  Over the years, Family Centers has grown into one of the area's leading and most trusted providers of human service and education programs.

Family Centers Health Care Opens at Wilbur Peck Court in Greenwich

Literacy Volunteers of Stamford/Greenwich merged with Family Centers, Inc.

2008
HealthCare Connection merged with Family Centers, Inc.

2005
Center for HOPE merged with Family Centers, Inc.

2005
Friendly Visitor - Greenwich became a service of Friendly Connections

2003
Stamford CARES and the School Based Health Centers (SBHC) merged to form HealthCare Connection

1998
The Gateway School for Young Children becomes a program of Family Centers Inc.

1996
The Den for Grieving Kids - a Support Center for Grieving Children & their Families founded by the Junior League of Greenwich becomes a program of Family Centers Inc.

1995
The Family Center, Inc. and Family & Children's Services, Inc. merged to form Family Centers Inc.

1994
Hotline, Inc. merged with The Family Center, Inc.

1993
Joan Melber Warburg Early Childhood Center and Adele D. Wenning Counseling Building open

1993
The Den for Grieving Children started by the Junior League of Greenwich

1991
Stamford CARES was incorporated

1990
School Based Health Center (SBHC) opened at Stamford High School

1987
Stamford AIDS Task Force was formed

1982
Center for HOPE was established

1976
Greenwich Center for Child & Family Service legally changed its name to The Family Center, Inc.

1972
New Canaan office opens

Gateway School was founded

1968
Darien Family Counseling Service merged with Family & Children's Services of Stamford to form Family & Children's Services of Stamford, Darien and New Canaan

1962
Family & Children's Services admitted to the United Fund of Darien

1961
Family & Children's Services admitted to the United Fund of New Canaan

1953
Family & Children's Center legally changed it's name to Family & Children's Services of Stamford.

1947
Darien Family Counseling Service established

1939 - 1941
Family Welfare Society, Child Guidance Clinic and Stamford Children's Services (Stamford Children's Home) merged to form Family & Children's Centers

1936
Child Guidance Clinic established as a program of Family & Children's Services

1932 - 1939
Greenwich Shelter, The Day Nursery, Greenwich Social Service, and the Catholic Welfare Bureau merged to form the Greenwich Center for Child & Family Service

1916
Greenwich Social Service League founded (Counseling Service)

1912
The United Workers opened the Emily Bruce Shelter - later renamed The Greenwich Shelter

1907
Greenwich Aid Society forms United Workers of Greenwich
